The Drama Barn
The Drama Barn is our on-campus venue, where most of our 100 shows per year take place.
To protect both our society members and our audiences, The Drama Barn is now closed until further notice. Whilst this is disappointing for us and our shows, we want to continue with our planned shows.
To allow this to happen, we will be live-streaming our performances. You can book tickets here!
If you are a member of the society, please make sure you read our COVID-19 update page as this has relevant information about how we are putting on shows this term.
Getting To The Barn
We are easily accessible by both car and public transport. Being based on the University of York West Campus, we are a short walk from UoY Central Campus Car Park – car parking is free from the hours of 6PM – 8AM most weekdays and weekends, so usually cover all our shows.
There are buses from the city centre and railway station approximately every 5 minutes during the day, and it takes around 20 minutes to reach the campus.
The UoY66 service runs from York railway station to Campus West, via the city centre – alight at the Library stop and walk back towards the information centre which is on the opposite side of the road where the main campus is.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a toilet in the venue?
Unfortunately we do not have a toilet in the venue. The nearest one to us is in Vanbrugh Nucleus just outside of Vanbrugh Arms (VBar).
How do I find out about content warnings?
Can I buy tickets on the door?
Yes! Tickets are available online and at the door. Cash payments only on the door but there are cash points nearby, the nearest is a 1 minute walk from The Barn at Nisa.
How long is the intermission?
The interval is approximately 15 minutes, doors staff should advise you on when to return to your seats.
We ask that patrons leave the venue during the interval to allow cast and crew to work at height in the interval, something we cannot do with patrons in the house.
Is there a bar?
DramaSoc does not operate a bar however the Student’s Union has a bar in Vanbrugh Nucleus called Vanbrugh Arms (VBar) and we encourage patrons to go there during the interval and after the show if they’re looking for somewhere to catch up with cast members.
Is there a cloakroom?
We do not offer a formal cloakroom service but depending on demand,
we may have some room to store big bags if needed.
However, we discourage you from bringing bulky items because we cannot guarantee storage. There is room under your seats to store items such as bags or coats.
Are seats assigned?
No, seating is not assigned. It is done on first- come first- served basis. However, friends and family from afar are given priority.
If you have access requirements, let us know and we can arrange reserved seats for you.
Is there a latecomers policy?
Unfortunately, we operate a strict NO LATECOMERS policy. Due to the nature of the venue, we cannot let people in during the performance without it being a distraction to the actors and other patrons so please arrive with time to spare.
Is there air conditioning?
We currently do not have air conditioning however due to the nature of the barn it is quite cool during the summer months.
Should I bring a cushion?
You may bring a cushion however we’ve recently refurbished our house seating so they’re a lot more comfortable, and feature a backrest!
Are non-uni people welcome?
Yes, we welcome everyone! We only ask that children under the age of 18 are accompanied by a responsible adult.
